The following is a statement from Democratic Party of Dane County Chair Michael Basford on the passing of Ed Garvey this morning after a lengthy illness. He was 76:
"We are very sad to learn of the passing this morning of progressive champion Ed Garvey.
Through his long career that included working for the National Football League’s Players Association, the State of Wisconsin Department of Justice and through his private practice, Ed Garvey fought for labor rights and environmental justice among many other progressive causes. He was well-known for a long time as a fighter speaking truth to power and who worked to provide a voice for the voiceless. His impact on Wisconsin politics was felt far and wide.
Like many Dane County and Wisconsin Democrats, I was proud to stand with Ed Garvey and volunteer for his campaigns for U.S. Senate in 1986 and Governor in 1998. In particular, his campaign focus on the need for campaign finance reform was decades ahead of its time. Fighting Bob Fest, which Ed founded, continues to inspire and activate progressives in our area.
We will keep you updated about pending memorial services. I hope you will join me in keeping his wife Betty, his family, friends and the many people he inspired through his work in our thoughts and prayers."
